AVOIDING ACCIDENTS AND SEVERE INJURY
One of the big health problems in the world is the amount of pain and misery, injury and death, caused by accidents. Accidents can be the result of many things; but almost all of them could be prevented.
Often accidents occur to the person who is not thinking about what he is doing, or whose judgment has been hurt by worry, anger, or the use of alcohol, or who is careless. The power and danger in the use of motor-cars is often not realized and many accidents, injuries and deaths occur through poor driving.
ACCIDENTS IN WORKPLACE
Some jobs are especially dangerous, and precautions need to be taken by both the employer and the employee. The dangers of getting objects in the eyes or of losing part or all of the hands or feet, must always be thought about and precautions taken. It is dangerous to the lungs to breathe dust, such as sometimes occurs in mines or where rocks are being crushed. In farming, there are dangers of poisoning by the substances used to kill insects and pests.
Around every home, fire is a great danger. Never should children be allowed to play with fire, or to play where they can fall into a fire. Care should be taken to see that they cannot pull hot pots or pans of food or water off the fire onto themselves. Handles of pots and pans on the stove should be turned to the back so that they cannot be knocked off accidentally.
AVOIDING HOME ACCIDENTS
Children should not be allowed to play with sharp or pointed objects, such as knives and pencils, with which they might cut themselves or which they might stick in their eyes, or fall on.
All medicines and other dangerous substances such as cleaning fluid need to be kept locked up where small children cannot get them.
Everyone, children and adults too, need to be aware of the danger of accidents. Remember, accidents can be prevented, if one thinks, takes care, and uses precautions.
